My Random MySpace Thought

Look, I know that myspace is popular with the under 35 crowd, but when a magazine like The New Yorker is talking about it, you start to wonder when the whole "everyone and their mom is on myspace" thing is gonna turn out to have some literal truth to it.

Anyway, the article discusses the use of myspace as a tool for music promotion. I have a friend in the entertainment industry who swears by myspace. She uses it to network, promote and gain exposure. My question is this: Do people use myspace to look for new music?

By now, most of you know that Fox Corp bought myspace for a billion dollars (actually more like 100 mil, same diff). This explains why all the movies released by Fox have myspace pages. Again I ask: Can myspace prove to be an effective marketing outlet?

Maybe the more relevant question to be asked is this: What do people really use myspace for? It interests me to see people create their internet alter-egos (inter-egos?) because I think it says more about how a person sees him/herself than it does about how that person really is. It's like a myspace page is a personal internet manifesto proclaiming a real-world identity. So, if a myspace page is just a way to reaffirm an identity, it stands to follow that musicians who maintain a myspace page do so to lend legitimacy to their identities as musicians.

So, are our myspace pages reflective of who we are or who we want to be? Is there room for marketing and promotion in the midst of all this identity negotiation? Let me know what you think, in the meanwhile, if your mom has a myspace, let me know, I'll add her :)

Wouldn't you say that myspace and blogspots are just the same. Both an extention of who we believe ourselves to be and who we want to be? Aren't bloggspots, another way of inviting the egos in all of us?

if musicians were fishermen and the fans were fish, myspace would be the hot spot where the yellowtail would bite. that's how i use it. toe.

Hey Ram. Love this blog. I agree with Jen that our pages are only *pretty* glimpses of what we want others to see about us. Even the self effacing statements I think are meant to add to our "witty" page because everyone is trying to outwit everyone else on this thing! I feel its so phony with people using adjectives to describe their personalities with words like "sushi" or what obscure music they can add to their profile that makes them even more unique. My rants on myspace come off as me being a hater so I will stop right there. The real questions that peaks my interest is how long is this concept going to last? Will I be 35 and still updating my myspace page?

Anyway, thanks to you and jen for coming out last night. Good times!

My MySpace page is only a phantom of me reflecting only the best parts of Jenn. I won't be publishing my credit card debt or pictures of me looking like a whale. I know they exist, but I'm not going to put it out there for the world to see. I think it's a hint of what's to come at each others' 10 year high school reunion - the InTouch or People magazine for our high schools and colleges...and you know how addicting those tabloid magazines are!

The music I look for on MySpace is only music that plays in my head...my ipod with my earbuds facing outward instead of in.

Just my $0.02.

i LOVE IT..yOUR SUCH A DORK! BUT THAT WHY i LOVE YA!

SOME THING YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW

CASSIE WAS SIGNED OFF OF MYSPACE
mICHAEL bOLTONS RECORD LABEL DECIDED TO DO ALL OF HIS PROMOTION ON MYSPACE FOR HIS LAST ALBUM..

SO DID mICHAEL jACKSON..

tILA tEQUILA DID SONGS WITH lIL jON AFTER MEETING FROM MYSPACE

SOMAYA rEESE WITH PHARRELL WILLIAMS

THERE ARE A LOT OF POSERS ON MYSPACE OR ASPIRING TO BE'S...

BUT A LOT OF ARTISTS WERE UNAWARE OF THE COMPETITION UNTIL IT WAS ACTUALLY SMACK DAB IN THE FACE.

THEY WERE UNAWARE OF ALL THE THINGS THEY HAVE TO ACHIEVE BEFORE A RECORD LABEL EVEN CONSIDERS SIGNING THEM

AND MYSPACE IN A WAY HAS BECOME THEIR MARKETING CRASH COURSE, BUT THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW IT..

THE THING IS,

WHETHER ITS AN ACTOR A SINGER, OR A RAPPER...ONCE THEY GET SIGNED THEY STILL ARE NOBODIES..EVEN THE RECORD LABELS RELY HEAVILY ON "hype" TO PROMOTE THEIR ARTISTS...

MYSPACE IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR THE ALTER EGO, AT THE SAME TIME, A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN GENERATE A HYPE OR BUZZ ABOUT HIS OR HER EGO.

IT'S ALL THE SAME SHIT<<< IN REAL LIFE, 50 CENT ISNT 50 CENT...HE'S CURTIS JACKSON..

LOVE YAH HOMIE
