Central Park

Ah, Central Park... The island in the middle of the City. The biggest urban park in the world (our very own Balboa Park comes in second).

It's funny how scale and perspective works. When we were walking around in the skyscrapers of midtown, the obvious demarcation of blocks and lots, combined with the towering concrete surroundings made distances seem farther. In the middle of the park, on the other hand, everything is on a much more human scale, which I suspect is why things seemed to be closer and distances shorter.

The designers of the park, Olmsted and Vaux, designed this promenade as the quintessential grand Victorian walkway. It's lined with magnificent elms and we saw people walking with their families, dogs, etc.

No, romance isn't dead.

On top of Belvedere Castle, a meteorology station and nature preserve. You can see the ball fields in the back.

Of course we went ice skating. I guess Trump sponsors the rink.
